OB Medevac with Kids: Strategies for a Smooth Family TDY

OB Medevac isn’t always a solo mission. For many State Department and government families, delivering a baby in the U.S. means bringing more than packing a hospital bag—it often means relocating the entire household. That can include toddlers, school-aged kids, or even teens—for up to 90 days or more.
If you’ve navigated TDY before, you’re likely familiar with managing orders and logistics. But OB Medevac with children is a different kind of challenge—one that combines prenatal care, postpartum recovery, and active parenting, all while far from home.
Here’s what families need to know about handling OB Medevac with kids in tow—and how TDY Rentals can help create a safe, supportive environment for everyone involved.
You Don’t Have to Squeeze Into a Hotel Room
One of the most common challenges we see? Families trying to get by in a standard hotel suite. While it may technically meet lodging requirements, it’s rarely sustainable for a recovering parent—and nearly impossible for a family trying to keep any sense of normalcy.
Short-term rental homes offer a better fit: more space, more privacy, and real-life essentials like full kitchens, laundry access, and separate bedrooms. These features make a big difference when you’re juggling nap schedules, virtual school, or a grumpy sibling alongside a newborn.
Choose Furniture That Actually Works for Your Family
With TDY Rentals, a portion of your lodging allowance can go toward brand-new, personally selected furnishings—and for OB Medevac families, that flexibility can make all the difference.
You can request essentials like:
- A real crib for the baby
- Bunk beds or twin beds for older siblings
- A rocking chair or glider for late-night feedings
- An office desk for remote school or work-from-home setup
- Blackout curtains to support better sleep for everyone
We handle the delivery, setup, and removal—so your temporary space feels less like a stopover, and more like a home.
Neighborhoods Matter—Especially with Kids
When you’re relocating for OB Medevac, it’s not just about being close to a hospital—it’s about creating a livable, low-stress environment for your whole family. We help you filter housing options based on what really matters: quiet, walkable neighborhoods, nearby playgrounds or parks, access to temporary child care or schooling, and proximity to extended family or key support systems.
Whether you’re staying near extended family or closer to your medical provider, we’ll help you find a location that makes life easier during this transition.
You Still Have to Remain Compliant
Even with kids in tow, OB Medevac TDY adheres to the rules, which differ from other temporary duty:
- No “paying rent to yourself” with per diem by staying in your permanent residence while claiming lodging reimbursement, BUT did you know that you are permitted to use your per diem toward rental furnishings while temporarily living in your permanent residence?
- Per diem durations of 90 days (or longer if medical complications require it)
- Per diem authorizations for expectant mothers and minor Eligible Family Members (EFMs) only…sorry dad!
We’ll make sure every step is compliant, so your receipts get reimbursed without delays or denials—even if you’re juggling a million other things.
You Don’t Have to Do This Alone
We understand the added complexity of OB Medevac with kids. You’re not just recovering from labor and delivery—you’re parenting, adjusting to a new routine, and working hard to keep things stable for your other children during a major transition.
That’s why we’re here. Our team simplifies the logistics so you can focus on what truly matters: keeping your family safe, rested, and supported as you welcome your newest member.
