The River Wall Essential Packing List
MISSION: Operation River Wall / SWB Support
DURATION: 4-12 Months-ish
ENVIRONMENT: High Heat, Riverine, Urban/Rural Mix
You have your orders, you have your seabag, and you have the standard guidance on going downrange. But the standard issue loadout doesn’t account for 12-hour shifts on an aluminum hull in 105°F heat, or living out of temporary lodging for 365 days. You also may be deploying as a detachment and/or without the luxury of a full pre-deployment workup cycle with the accompanying support.
Supporting folks downrange is what we do. Here is the government issue “double-check” list to augment your issued load-out with real needs. Little things that you add to your loadout can really boost your mental and physical health while downrange, which is good for the mission, your shipmates, and you.

The Boat Kit: On-Duty Comfort
The Rio Grande Valley is humid, the water is muddy, and the sun is relentless. Make sure to pack extra:
- Polarized Eye Protection: Recommendation: Oakley or Wiley X with polarized lenses.
- “12-Hour” Seat Cushion: TPSB and RBS seats are brutal on the lower back during long patrols. A gel-pad or compact foam seat cushion is a back-saver.
- High-Dexterity River Gloves: Mechanix or Pig fast-dry synthetical tactical gloves
- Moisture-Wicking Socks (The Gold Standard): Cotton kills. Invest in 10+ pairs of Merino wool blend socks (Darn Tough or Smartwool). They regulate heat and prevent rot when boots get soaked.
- Non-DEET Insect Repellent: River gnats and mosquitoes in the RGV are aggressive. High-percentage DEET melts plastic gear. Look for Picaridin-based lotions that are gear-safe.
- Neck Gaiter/Buff (UV Rated): The sun reflects off the water. Protect your neck and face from the “raccoon mask” burn, if allowed by your LE uniform policy.

The TDY Rental Kit: Off-Duty Sanity
Making this space “yours” is critical for mental endurance.
- Blackout Solutions: You will work nights. Curtains have gaps. Pack a roll of black electrical tape (to cover LEDs on TVs/smoke detectors) and add portable blackout curtains with suction cups (rent them from TDY Rentals).
- Quality Pillow: Pillows go flat in a week. Select your own high-quality, memory foam pillow. Sleep is your most valuable resource (rent them from TDY Rentals).
- The “Mini-Kitchen”: Eating tacos every day is great for a week, bad for a year.
- Consider: An Instant Pot or high-end Air Fryer.
- Real silverware and a good chef’s knife. Because plastic cutlery breaks the soul.
- Streaming Stick: Don’t rely on local cable. A Roku/Firestick turns the TDY TV into your home TV.
- Noise Machine: Temporary lodging is noisy. Your neighbors might not be on night shift.
- LED Light Strip: A 10-15’ LED light strip is a cheap buy that will greatly improve your circadian rhythm and the homey feel of your room – turn it to soft red at night when prepping for night ops and for overnight safety lighting in common spaces, light blue to gently wake up your body, green to create a fun movie/gaming environment for down time.

The Admin Pack: Left-Behind Logistics
Before you step on the plane, ensure the home front is locked down.
- SCRA Lease Termination Letters: Have copies ready for your lodging and vehicle leases.
- Vehicle Storage Plan: If you aren’t driving your POV, don’t just park it. Add fuel stabilizer, disconnect the battery, and put it on blocks if possible (contact us for a free vehicle storage prep document…because we’ve done this before!).
- Digital Power of Attorney: Ensure a spouse or trusted family member can sign for you while you are downrange.
