OB Medevac isn’t just about coming home to deliver your baby—it’s about navigating the return journey overseas, newborn in arms, after weeks or even months in transition.
Once the hospital bags are unpacked and the final signatures are in place, a new set of questions quickly surfaces:

  • How long can we stay?
  • When do we return?
  • What happens to our housing, our furniture, and all those receipts?

Here’s what to expect after your baby arrives—and how to prepare for the next step: returning to post.

How Long Can You Stay in the U.S. After Delivery?

Most OB Medevac orders allow for up to 90 days in the U.S.—providing time to arrive, prepare for delivery, give birth, and recover postpartum.
In some cases, families may receive medical extensions due to complications or the newborn’s medical needs, but these are reviewed individually and must be approved through the appropriate channels.

To avoid last-minute stress, it’s essential to confirm your departure timeline early. This helps ensure that housing, travel, and logistics can be coordinated smoothly and on schedule.

Wrapping Up Your Housing

When you stay with a TDY housing provider like TDY Rentals, the end of your stay is designed to be hassle-free. You’re not responsible for deep cleaning, shutting off utilities, or arranging movers. From furnishing pickup to key return, all final steps are handled for you.

If you purchased furniture during your stay, you’ll have two options:

  • Buy it at a steep discount—typically around 25% of retail value, or
  • Leave it and let our team handle liquidation on your behalf

We take care of removal, compliance, and property turnover so you can focus on your family—not logistics—during your final days in the U.S.

Final Paperwork and Reimbursement

To ensure smooth and timely reimbursement, your receipts, housing agreement, and furniture selections must meet compliance standards. Delays in submitting documents can make it harder to resolve any issues or red flags.

TDY Rentals provides all required documentation in the correct format, including:

  • Clear, compliant contract language
  • GSA-aligned rates
  • Non-itemized receipts with daily taxes included

To avoid processing delays, we recommend submitting your reimbursement voucher as soon as your medevac concludes.

Preparing for International Travel with a Newborn

Heading back to post with a newborn involves more than just booking a flight—it’s a process that requires planning, paperwork, and coordination. Key steps include:

  • Securing your baby’s birth certificate, passport, and Social Security number
  • Providing a record of birth to your agency (usually while still in the hospital!)
  • Obtaining medical and travel clearances
  • Notifying your post’s HR or admin team about your return timeline
  • Obtaining travel authorizations
  • Coordinating any necessary medical care or travel accommodations with your provider and pediatrician
  • Coordinating your layette shipment back to post
  • Preparing breastmilk and/or formula for shipment to post

Give yourself plenty of time and grace—this is a major transition, even without factoring in jet lag and midnight feedings.

We’re With You to the End—And Back Again
